On March 22, 2023, Shahanur Islam, a human rights lawyer from Bangladesh and the founder of JusticeMakers Bangladesh, met with Mr. Eric Lejeune from the Association for the Recognition of the Rights of Homosexual and Trans People to Immigration and Residence (ARDHIS) at the SPACE office in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the present situation of LGBTQI+ rights in Bangladesh and seek cooperation to improve the rights of sexual minorities in the country.
During the meeting, Mr. Islam highlighted the numerous challenges faced by LGBTQI+ individuals in Bangladesh, including physical assault, murder, threats, rape, sexual abuse, bullying, discrimination, social stigma, and psychological abuse. He also noted that these incidents often go unreported due to stigma and intolerance from families, society, and the state. Additionally, existing discriminatory laws criminalize same-sex activities and can lead to life imprisonment.
As ARDHIS works for LGBTQI+ people's immigration and residence in France, Mr. Shahanur Islam offered his voluntary cooperation to provide information on the asylum process for Bangladeshi LGBTQI+ asylum seekers seeking support from ARDHIS. This cooperation is expected to provide much-needed assistance to those seeking asylum due to persecution faced in their home country.
Mr. Shahanur Islam and Mr. Eric Lejeune from ARDHIS informally agreed to share relevant information with each other and explore future cooperation. This collaboration is expected to pave the way for improved rights and protections for the LGBTQI+ community in Bangladesh and across the world.
The meeting was facilitated by Ms. Agathe LOUMMALIA from Groupe SOS Solidarités, an organization that provides support and assistance to individuals facing various challenges, including those related to immigration and human rights. The presence of Ms. Agathe LOUMMALIA further highlights the importance of cooperation and support for marginalized communities globally.
The collaboration between JusticeMakers Bangladesh and ARDHIS offers hope for a better future for LGBTQI+ individuals in Bangladesh and represents a significant step towards promoting equal rights for all individuals regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
