Yesterday, an informal meeting took place between Advocate Shahanur Islam, the founder and Secretary General of Justice Makers Bangladesh, and Timothee Truelly, the South Asia Affairs Officer of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs. They met at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs building in Paris to discuss a range of important topics related to Bangladesh.
During the meeting, they talked about the current political situation in Bangladesh and the need for democracy, rule of law, and human rights. They also discussed issues faced by minority communities, such as ethnic, tribal, religious, social dalit, and sexual LGBT communities. They spoke about the persecution of political leaders and workers, extrajudicial killings, and the issue of disappearances.
The upcoming general elections were also discussed, with an emphasis on ensuring citizens' right to vote, unhindered political command, and preventing people's voices from being silenced through misuse of the digital security law.
The conversation turned to the rise of Islamic militancy during the previous BNP-Jamaat coalition government and the violent activities that occurred during that time. They talked about the bomb blasts in 63 districts by Islamic militants, the brutal activities of Bangla Bhai, the bomb attack on the UK ambassador, the grenade attack on August 21st, and the killing of former finance minister.
The meeting also touched on the strict suppression of Islamic militants during the current government and the strong fear that Islamic militancy will rise again if the BNP-Jamaat government comes to power.
Advocate Shahanur Islam urged the French government to take effective measures to protect and promote overall human rights and to repeal the Digital Security Act of Bangladesh.
During the meeting, they agreed to have regular bilateral meetings and exchange information to continue the conversation on these important topics.
