European Legal Council Urges Bangladesh Prime Minister to Protect Human Rights Lawyer Shahanur Islam

The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), representing more than a million lawyers across 46 European countries, has issued an urgent plea to Her Excellency, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh. In a letter dated July 7, 2023, CCBE expressed deep concern regarding the ongoing threats and harassment faced by human rights lawyer Shahanur Islam and his family.

Shahanur Islam is a well-respected figure in the legal and human rights community, known for his unwavering dedication to advocating for marginalized groups, including ethnic, religious, political, and sexual minorities in Bangladesh. His work spans a wide range of issues, including the defense of LGBTQI+ rights and representation of individuals subjected to torture, extrajudicial killings, and forced disappearances.

Recent reports have revealed that Shahanur Islam has become the target of severe threats on social media platforms due to his vocal advocacy for LGBTQI+ rights in Bangladesh. These threats have been attributed to an extremist fake Facebook user known as "Mon Day," who issued a call to various religious and activist groups, including Bangladesh Ulamae Keram, imams, khatibs, and online activists. "Mon Day" urged them to ostracize Shahanur Islam due to his advocacy work. The call also extended to a demand for the ban of "Justice Makers Bangladesh," an organization co-founded by Shahanur Islam.

What is particularly concerning is that this call to action by "Mon Day" has garnered significant support, with 143 individuals reacting positively to his message, including likes and shares. Furthermore, 41 individuals posted comments in support of the threats.

The CCBE has expressed deep concern about these developments, taking into account the serious threats and harassment previously faced by Shahanur Islam and his family. The organization has previously corresponded with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina regarding such threats.

In its latest letter, the CCBE references the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, highlighting principles that emphasize the importance of lawyers being able to carry out their professional duties without fear of intimidation, harassment, or hindrance.

The CCBE respectfully calls upon Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take immediate measures to ensure the safety and protection of Shahanur Islam and his family. The organization emphasizes that these threats are believed to be linked to Shahanur Islam's legitimate activities as a human rights lawyer. Additionally, the CCBE urges the Bangladeshi government to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the threats, aiming to hold those responsible accountable in accordance with international standards.

The CCBE's appeal underscores the significance of preserving the independence and integrity of the administration of justice and the rule of law. It highlights the crucial role played by human rights lawyers like Shahanur Islam in defending the rights of marginalized communities.

As the international community closely monitors these developments, the safety and well-being of Shahanur Islam and his family are of paramount concern. The response of the Bangladeshi government is eagerly awaited, as the world watches with a keen eye.
