JusticeMakers Bangladesh concerns over the arrest of lesbian girl in Meherpur

The human rights organization JusticeMakers Bangladesh has expressed deep concern and anger over the filling false and fabricated case of kidnapping against a sexual minority lesbian girl and sent to her to jail custody in Meherpur to prevent homosexuality.

At the same time, JusticeMakers Bangladesh has strongly demanded that the all culprits involved in the incident to be given exemplary punishment after investigated quickly and impartially.

According to the news published in the online newspaper Deshdarpan.com on 30 June 2022 AD, the mother of one lesbian girl filed a kidnapping case in the name of one lesbian girl to prevent the homosexuality of two girls in Meherpur. Mujibnagar Police Station arrested a young lesbian girls named Tanya Khatun (21) in this incident last Wednesday (June 29). The detained girl is the daughter of Mubarak Ali of Gaurinagar village of Mujibnagar upazila. Later she was sent to jail custody through the court.

Abdul Hannan, a local UP member, said that despite the age difference between the two, they used to walk together like girlfriends. At one point during a long journey, they both fell in love with each other. Detained Tanya Khatun sometimes disappeared with that minor girl for two or three days. Recently, two of them were rescued from a house in Meherpur and handed over to two families. Even then their association could not be stopped. They would run away whenever they got the chance.

Mujibnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mehedi Russell said, the mother of a minor girl of Gourinagar village in the upazila filed a complaint of abduction and accused Tanya Khatun, her father Mubarak Hossain and mother Anwara Khatun of the same village under the Prevention of Cruelty against Women and Children Act of 2000 (Amended) 2003 under section 7 and 30.

OC Mehdi Russell also said, according to the locals, Tanya Khatun, a minor, sometimes disappeared with the young woman. The two of them are known as homosexuals in the area.

Meherpur Court Inspector Gholam Mohammad said that when the victim and accused Tanya Khatun were taken to the court of Judicial Magistrate (2nd) Tariqul Islam, both of them gave statements under section 22. After the statement and medical examination to determine the age of the victim, the one girl ordered the custody of the parents and sent the accused Tanya Khatun to jail.

It is to be noted that before that two young women were accused of homosexuality. A lot of excitement spread in the area. Even trying to solve the problem as a family did not help. Many local people said that they went to the shelter of the law because of coercion.

Founder Secretary General of JusticeMakers Bangladesh and prominent lawyer and gay rights activist Advocate Shahanur Islam has expressed strong protest and anger regarding the incident of arresting and jailing a lesbian woman in a false abduction case just because of her sexual orientation and same-sex relationship.

In addition, Aadvocate Shahanur Islam believed that the incident of being arrested and sent to prison in a false case just because of being a sexual minority lesbian, is clearly gender-based discrimination and a clear violation of the fundamental human rights declared by the United Nations.

Advocate Shahnur Islam believes that the mentioned incidents are not an isolated incidents in Bangladesh. Rather, it is only a small part of numerous human rights violations, including discrimination, murder, injury, involvement in false cases against who are sexually minorities throughout Bangladesh.

Advocate Shahanur Islam also believes that the people of the homosexual lesbian community are constantly subjected to various types of human rights violations including discrimination, but due to social inadmissibility and intolerance, most of those incidents remain invisible to the public.

Finally, Advocate Shahanur Islam made a strong demand for the constitutional recognition of homosexuals LGBT people by repealing Section 377 of the Penal Code and enacting a homosexual protection law to protect them.
